Independent Venue Week: Fortune Promotions
Artists and venues across Scotland have teamed up to banish your January Blues with this years’ Independent Music Venue week commencing this evening.
Three of Edinburgh’s top music venues; Sneaky Pete’s, La Belle Angele and Electric Circus are offering a stellar line up for the week ahead that includes Admiral Fallow, The Van T’s and Man of Moon. Independent Music Venue Week not only promises great music, but also aims to highlight the importance of smaller local venues to the Scottish music scene and music fans alike, particularly with so many closures in recent years.
Sun Columnist and DJ, Jim Gellatly shares this view adding, “We’ve got some really good venues, we should all be getting behind them, especially in these tough times.”
He voiced his appreciation of Independent Venue Week by saying; “Anything that draws attention to independent venues is a great thing. It’s brilliant to see them all get together like this.”
Gellatly emphasised the positive impact this week will have by drawing attention to great Scottish existing bands as well as offering encouragement to up and coming bands to plat more venues and shows. When asked what bands he is looking forward to seeing in Edinburgh he said; “The Van T’s at Sneaky Pete’s are certainly worth catching. Also Verse Metrics and Star Rover at La Belle Angele.”
I caught up with The Van T’s to chat about the exciting week ahead and what being a part of Independent Music Venue Week means to them.
The Van T’s were keen to stress how crucial local venues are to their careers and fans; “I think the most important thing to show is that people are still turning out to these shows and that the venues are still well used. It’s about making people realise how much we need them and keeping as many open
as possible before any more end up closed down.”
They also pointed out the benefit of promoting local talented artists and bands in independent venues as being inspiration for those who come along to start a band and get involved in the Scottish music scene, with the added bonus of the gigs being 14+; “The more these things happen, the more bands will play them, the more fans will come out and enjoy themselves, the bigger the music scene gets.”
As they prepare for a roaring gig this Thursday night at Sneaky Pete’s they added; “We’re really happy to have been asked to do the show and will no doubt be recommending the cause to a lot of our friends to play or even just go in future!”
